Trees are the organisms which can live the longest period of time (in terms of life on Earth). The reason for this is hidden in vascular system of these plants. Other reason can be defensive system they have developed against parasites.

It is believed that the oldest tree in the world is Great Basin Bristle-cone pine. This specific tree is called Methuselah and is old a bit under 5 thousand years. It got its name after Methuselah Alley in Nevada (USA), where it was located. The age of this oldest tree in the world was calculated by counting its rings. The exact location of Methuselah is hidden in order to preserve the oldest tree in the world from vandalism or anyone who could harm it in any way. There is one tree named Prometheus that is even older, but it was cut down in 1964.

After Methuselah, another candidate for the oldest tree in the world is Sarv-e-Abarkooh, which was also named by location where it stands – Abarkooh, Iran. This tree (cypress precisely) is old around 4 thousand years and is really special to Iranian people, because they adore it in religious way. They believe this tree has survived for so long due to miraculous reasons.

It is also very likely that this cypress is the oldest tree in Asia. Another old tree is Patagonian cypress named Alerce. It is old over 3.500 years.
